  • Solo Exhibition at The Gallery at Hallmark:

    The Gallery at Hallmark

I am very pleased to announce that the long-anticipated solo exhibition of my New England meetinghouse photographs will make its first appearance at The Gallery at Hallmark in historic Turners Falls, Massachusetts, from July 22 through September 4, 2011.

An opening reception with refreshments and live music will take place on Saturday, July 23, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. I look forward to seeing old friends, and meeting new ones too.

In addition to the exhibition, the gallery will also have copies of my book A Space for Faith: The Colonial Meetinghouses of New England for sale, and I would be happy to sign a copy for you. Copies may also be purchased Here.

The Gallery at Hallmark is one of New England’s premier photography galleries. Part of the Hallmark Institute of Photography, it has shown the work of many well-known photographers, including William Wegman, Lynn Goldsmith, and Lois Greenfield.

Regular gallery hours are Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 1 to 5 PM, or by appointment.

For driving directions, please visit: The Gallery at Hallmark

Turners Falls is located along the Connecticut River in north-central Massachusetts, just off on I-91, Exit 27. There are many other interesting attractions in the area, including Historic Deerfield , a colonial-era museum featuring a wonderful collection of period buildings.

“There is a beauty to this collection of work that transcends time. The images capture a feeling and essence of these hushed yet very alive places. The careful design and craftsmanship of the photographs honor the stunning simplicity of early colonial architecture.”
- Lisa Robinson, Executive Director, The Gallery at Hallmark

“Paul Wainwright is one of the best traditional silver gelatin printers in the country.”
- Tony Decaneas, founder of Panopticon Gallery in Boston

  • More Awards for the Book:

In addition to the New England Book Festival Award for best photography/art book of 2010, which was announced earlier this year, my book A Space for Faith has received two additional awards:

    • The Independent Publishers 2011 Gold Medal Award for the best northeast regional non-fiction book of the year, and

    • The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) 2011 Leadership in History Award of Merit, which will be presented at their annual meeting in Richmond, Virginia, in September.

Paul Wainwright's outstanding book, A Space for Faith: The Colonial Meetinghouses of New England, is in a class by itself. His stunning photographs are a real tribute to those Colonial craftsmen who built these unique and beautiful structures.
- Donald W. Dollard, Vice President, Auburn NH Historical Association

  • Continuing Media Praise:

    • Click to view article "New England’s meetinghouses embody a fascinating chapter of American history, and the surviving ones represent a unique architectural form that is distinctly New England. But most of all, they serve as reminders of a very different time, when the boundaries among government, religion, and community were nearly invisible."

    • Excerpts from the book were published as the cover story in the Summer 2011 edition of Faith & Form, the interfaith journal on religion, art, and architecture.

"By focusing on weathered and time-worn surfaces, and on details such as distorted crown glass and wrought iron hardware, Wainwright's more intimate photographs convey a powerful impression of age, use, and the ultimate transformation of these once central buildings into quiet relics."
- James L. Garvin, New Hampshire State Architectural Historian

  • Public Speaking Engagements:

"Paul Wainwright's work continues in the tradition of Walker Evans. His fastidious attention to the technical perfection of the photographer's art enables him to produce an important work in the documentation of American material culture."
- James P. Hanlan, Professor of History, Worcester Polytechnic Institute

  • Free DVD Available for Community Cable Broadcast:

Copies of this DVD are still available:

The Derry, New Hampshire community cable television station has recorded a 30-minute interview with me about my meetinghouse photography and book, which is available free of charge to other non-profit community TV channels. It will be of interest to any community that has an interest in their historic buildings, particularly if they have a former meetinghouse. If your community has such a channel, you may request a free copy of the DVD by sending e-mail to me: Contact Paul.
