The Details:
At long last,
A Space for Faith: The Colonial Meetinghouses of New England
has arrived at the distributor and is now available for immediate delivery.
This is an elegant book of my large-format photographs of these little-known icons of our nation's heritage.
In addition to appreciating the historical significance of these buildings,
I find them to be inspiring places in which
to make photographs, and my work reflects my artistic reaction to them.
The book includes an essay by Peter Benes, founder and Director of the
Dublin Seminar for New England Folklife,
which tells the story behind these magnificent structures.
Peter is one of the most respected living authorities on New England history,
and his essay is an excellent companion to my photographs.
Brent Glass, Director of the
National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian,
has written a foreword which links
the historical importance of New England's meetinghouses to our lives today.
William Earle Williams,
Chair of the Art Department at
Haverford College,
has provided a commentary about my photographs
which compares them favorably to those of some of the masters of the 20th century
such as Paul Strand, Walker Evans, and Paul Caponigro.
While most photographers dream of a lavish "coffee table" book costing $80 or $90,
that was never my goal with this publication.
I wanted a book that could reach a large audience.
I wanted high-quality reproductions of my work, of course,
but I also wanted a significant historical narrative.
I wanted a book that could fit on a bookshelf or in a suitcase,
and I wanted it to be affordable.
The retail price of $35 is a great deal, and is made possible by generous support from
Mass Humanities,
New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, and
New Hampshire Charitable Foundation.

one of my 11x14 hand-crafted selenium-toned silver gelatin photographs,
printed, spotted, and mounted by me on archival museum board, for $400.
Copies 31 - 100 are the Deluxe Edition, signed, numbered, and presented in a slip case, but do not include a print.
The Deluxe Edition is $75.
