Atkinson

Goal: Replace a FAILING culvert with one that allows safe passage for turtles and other wildlife

What will it cost?

  • Total project cost: $445,640.00
  • Aquatic Resource Mitigation ("ARM") Fund grant (pending): $365,640.00
  • Cost to the Town: $80,000.00
  • Without the grant, the cost of a "normal" culvert would be $134,550.00 (more expensive!)
  • These costs are based on a preliminary engineering design, paid for with ARPA funds

Where will the culvert be located?

  • The existing culvert (pictured above) crosses upper Maple Avenue next to #124 (see maps below)
  • The culvert connects two of the largest Prime Wetlands in Atkinson
  • These were once one wetland before Maple Avenue was built 150+ years ago
  • Threatened and Endangered turtles are frequently killed trying to cross the road here.
  • The Wildlife-Friendly culvert would essentially re-connect these wetlands
